Our Curation & Evaluation Methodology
The term ‘luxury’ is subjective. At Luxury Liveaboard Komodo, we define it through a rigorous, objective, and multi-faceted evaluation methodology. This process ensures that every aspect of the experience we offer—from the vessel itself to the crew and the itinerary—meets an uncompromising standard of excellence. This methodology is the foundation of our promise to our clients and the reason our recommendations are a trusted benchmark in the industry. It is how we guarantee the quality of our signature luxury liveaboard Komodo charters.
The Four Pillars of Evaluation
Our proprietary 200-point audit is structured around four core pillars. Every vessel in our fleet and every partner we collaborate with is assessed against these criteria.
1. Vessel & Hardware Excellence (70 points)
This pillar covers the physical attributes and safety infrastructure of the yacht.
- Safety & Seaworthiness (30 pts): SOLAS-compliant safety equipment (life rafts, EPIRB, satellite phones), engine room maintenance logs, hull integrity, navigation systems (radar, GPS, depth sounders), and adherence to Indonesian Maritime Authority (Direktorat Jenderal Perhubungan Laut) standards.
- Cabin & Amenity Quality (20 pts): Suite size and layout, quality of linens and mattresses, water pressure and temperature consistency, soundproofing, in-suite entertainment, and brand of toiletries.
- Communal Space Design (10 pts): Ergonomics and comfort of lounge and dining areas, sun deck layout, dedicated camera rooms for photographers, and overall aesthetic coherence.
- Dive & Watersports Infrastructure (10 pts): Quality and maintenance of dive compressors (including Nitrox availability), condition of tenders/skiffs, organization of the dive deck, and availability of equipment like kayaks and paddleboards.
2. Crew & Service Protocol (60 points)
A vessel is only as good as its crew. We evaluate the human element with exacting detail.
- Expertise & Credentials (25 pts): Captain’s license (ANT I) and experience in the region, Divemaster/Instructor PADI certifications and dive logs, Chef’s culinary background, and butler service training. We verify all credentials with the issuing bodies.
- Service Ratio & Attentiveness (20 pts): A high crew-to-guest ratio is mandatory. We conduct on-site observations to assess proactivity, discretion, and personalization of service.
- Local Knowledge & Guiding Quality (15 pts): The ability of the cruise director and guides to provide deep, engaging insights into the region’s ecology, history, and culture.
3. Itinerary & Experience Design (40 points)
We assess the intelligence and flexibility of the journey itself.
- Bespoke Potential (20 pts): The ability to deviate from standard routes to accommodate guest preferences, weather conditions, and unique wildlife sighting opportunities.
- Pacing & Flow (10 pts): A well-paced itinerary that balances adventure with relaxation, avoiding overcrowding at popular sites like Padar Island and Pink Beach by timing visits for optimal, private experiences.
- Exclusivity & Access (10 pts): The operator’s ability to secure access to special anchorages or arrange unique onshore experiences not available to the general public.
4. Sustainability & Compliance (30 points)
True luxury is responsible. This pillar is non-negotiable.
- Environmental Practices (15 pts): Comprehensive waste management system, ban on single-use plastics, use of reef-safe sunscreens and cleaning products, and fuel-efficient cruising plans.
- Regulatory Compliance (10 pts): Possession of all necessary licenses including SIUP-PARIWISATA, valid tax registration (NPWP), and crew coverage under BPJS insurance. See more on our Safety & Compliance page.
- Community Engagement (5 pts): Sourcing of provisions from local communities in Flores, fair employment practices, and contributions to local conservation initiatives. More on our Sustainability page.
Audit Process & Cadence
Every vessel undergoes this full 200-point audit annually, conducted by our senior management team via an unannounced site visit. Quarterly reviews are also conducted to ensure standards are maintained. Only vessels that consistently score above 180 points are chartered under the Luxury Liveaboard Komodo brand. This rigorous, transparent methodology ensures we offer nothing but the absolute best of the best.

Safety & Compliance
Imagine the scent of salt air mingling with the aroma of exotic spices as your private chef prepares a gourmet dinner, the only sound the gentle lapping of waves against a beautifully crafted hull. This is the promise of a luxury liveaboard Komodo experience, meticulously curated not just for its stunning destinations, but for the unparalleled quality woven into every detail.
Beyond SOLAS compliance, our audit delves into the practical application of these safety standards. This includes the regular inspection records of all safety equipment—life rafts, EPIRBs, fire suppression systems—and the rigorous training protocols for emergency procedures that every crew member must undergo. We verify a vessel’s navigation technology, ensuring it features advanced radar, GPS, and communication systems crucial for navigating the intricate Komodo archipelago.
True luxury extends beyond functionality to an immersive aesthetic experience. We scrutinize the vessel’s design, assessing everything from the handcrafted teak decks and opulent cabins to the elegant common areas. This includes the quality of materials, the craftsmanship of joinery, and the overall harmony of the interior and exterior design. Whether it’s a meticulously restored traditional Phinisi or a sleek, contemporary yacht, it must exude an undeniable sense of bespoke elegance.
A luxury liveaboard is a floating sanctuary of comfort and entertainment. Our evaluation covers state-of-the-art entertainment systems, reliable Wi-Fi connectivity even in remote areas, and a comprehensive suite of water sports equipment—from paddleboards and kayaks to top-tier snorkeling and diving gear, including certified instructors. We also assess the efficiency of critical systems like air conditioning, watermakers, and power generation, ensuring seamless operation throughout the journey.
The art of service and local expertise
Our 60-point assessment for crew and service excellence goes far beyond basic hospitality, delving into the nuanced dynamics that transform a good trip into an unforgettable voyage. We evaluate the professionalism, extensive training, and local expertise of every crew member, from the captain navigating challenging currents to the dive masters revealing the vibrant underwater world. Each team member, including the onboard naturalist guides, possesses deep knowledge of the Komodo National Park’s
